The writing is free from distracting errors. The protagonists are likable, and their relationship evolves and develops nicely throughout the story. Although the pacing seems off at times (some parts of the story pass too quickly), the entire novel is a satisfying, quick adventure. There is a bit of humor, some plot twists, sword fighting, magical elements, mystery, and hints of romance. While many elements of the story are familiar, the story is engaging, moves along briskly, and has a clean ending. If there is another book after this one, I'd be happy to read it.

Firehearted Sabrina Chase 9780985270490 Books Reviews

This is the story of a noblewoman who is sent to a remote post due to a slight against the equivalent of a king. There she meets an "enemy barbarian" and rather than see him die in the cold, she takes him in assuming that he will die, just without the dishonor of dying in the cold. He doesn't die and it causes a bit of a dilemma for her.

I liked this novel particularly the author's ability to show how ridiculous bias is just because someone is different. The heroine, Ronne, finds she needs friends and allies from various cultures in order to save the remainder of the kingdom. Watching other characters in the story get over their bias was interesting.

I do have a few complaints and that is the author's explanation of a culture's way of doing this is a bit convoluted. I at times found myself saying, "huh" but it wasn't enough to cause me to put the book down. Also, the little section where the story is being told from the perspective of the snow tiger was a bit dumb. I think the author should do a novella to better explain the snow tiger as the excerpt in the book did not work. Overall, I give this book a 3.5 that is rounded to four.
I greatly enjoyed reading Firehearted. The story was interesting enough that I hated to put it down. The writing is straight-forward and easy to understand. The author is quite good at switching between viewpoints (though the one chapter told from the snow tiger's viewpoint shouldn't have been included!) The fantasy world setting is complex and reasonable. I even enjoyed difficulties presented by different languages.

However... when I reached the tale's end, there were still a LOT of unanswered questions How come they didn't use all of the magic items they were given? How could a single bad guy - even one with a huge army & magic - destroy such a long established empire when our heroes were able to prevail? How did the blind girl help? If custom and social strictures are so important that she accepted virtual exile at the beginning, how come it was okay to ignore them at the story's end? The main characters' story seemed complete, it simply left a lot of loose ends.

I checked to see if I had inadvertently chosen part of a trilogy that would fill in the missing pieces for me. I can only hope that there will be more tales in this setting that will answer my lingering questions.
This book was quite enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it for anyone wanting a fairly light adventure story with a bit of romance. It's very nice to find an author who has the book edited properly, tells a good story, and knows how to do so without a lot of unnecessarily graphic sex or violence.

The story dragged just a tiny bit here and there and some things could have been better explained, perhaps, but then in another world, does everything really HAVE to be explained? I think we can just take it as being part of the fantasy.

I don't think many people would be disappointed in this book.
Ronne, an exiled swordnoble, is living in a deserted outpost of the vast Empire when she decides to shelter a dying barbarian warrior. Erith, the barbarian who is an outcast from his people, miraculously recovers from his wounds. Much to the chagrin of Ronne who hadn't really thought he'd survive his wounds. Despite the fact that the Empire may discover her harboring an enemy, she continues to shelter Erith in the face of winter storms.

With his help and the help of other loyal Empire soldiers, they discover a betrayal that cuts deep into the vast realm of Ronne's people. Along with the aid of new magics they discover, they work to fight the evil that invades the land.

I'm always a bit reserved when I start books that I got for free.* I quickly lost all reservations after the first two or three chapters. Chase's writing style is easy to lose yourself in.

She also has a masterful way of seamlessly switching between the perspectives of Ronne and Erith. I don't know many writers who can do that without making me dizzy.

The adventure is fast-paced without leaving you breathless. There's an easy flow to the adventure that you fall into rhythm with. It's engrossing and hard to put down. Yet not so intense that you need to take a deep breath and step away from every now and then.

Her characters are nicely developed and I found myself really responding to Erith. He was a fish out of water and I'm sure we've all felt like that at some point or another. For me, he was the easiest to relate to.

The cultures she wove into her world were fascinating and reminded me of several here in our world. Enough so, that I kept trying to see the correlation and the differences. She didn't fully flesh all of them out though. She gave just enough for you to get the feel for them and for me, that was enough.

It was a well-rounded story and it made me wish this was the beginning of a series.

*It's no longer listed as free but I think it's well worth the price!
